The City of Reno and the Reno Police Department are mourning the loss of Detective Thomas Lopey, a dedicated public servant whose death has left colleagues, friends, and the wider community in deep sorrow.
Detective Lopey served with the Reno Police Department for nearly 13 years, building a career defined by professionalism, leadership, and commitment to public safety. Prior to joining RPD, he served with the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office as a deputy sheriff, where he began his law enforcement career before transferring to Reno.
Before his time in law enforcement, Lopey also served in the United States Army for four years as an infantry mortarman. He deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom during the Iraq War and later continued his military service in the National Guard as a combat engineer. His combined military and law enforcement service reflected a lifelong dedication to protecting others.
Within the Reno Police Department, Detective Lopey was known for his excellence in patrol operations and his role as a Patrol Training Officer, where he mentored and guided new officers entering the field. He later served in the Regional Gang Unit and was assigned as a detective, also becoming a member of the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team.
Reno Police Chief Corey Solferino described Lopey as a respected leader and deeply valued colleague, noting his dedication to both his family and the community he served. City officials also extended condolences, with Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve acknowledging his lifelong commitment to service and the lasting impact of his work.
Lopey is survived by his wife and daughter, who now join the broader law enforcement family and community in mourning his loss. Colleagues have emphasized the deep sense of grief felt within the department, describing him as the kind of officer every agency hopes to have and every colleague is fortunate to work beside.
As the community reflects on his passing, Detective Thomas Lopey is being remembered not only for his service, but for his character, mentorship, and unwavering dedication to others. His legacy will continue to live on through the officers he trained, the lives he impacted, and the community he faithfully served.
